There's a stipulation that New York City is behind on coffee. We certainly drink a lot of it, but the majority is not great. Starbucks? Burnt. Deli? Watery. There's a great article in Edible Manhattan, however, about the "third-wave" of coffee shops, like Ithaca's Gimme! Coffee, that are bringing better brews to the island.

I stopped drinking lattes when I moved here from Seattle - they're just pathetic here for the most part and not worth the extra money. But I do love 9th Street Espresso, and I'm very excited for Stumptown.
I don't live in New York, but I feel your pain. Too many corporate coffee houses have squeezed out the real coffee houses.
Kate, those two were also in the article! :)
notsocrafty.com, yes, very very sad.
